INDUSTRY:

The Dominican Republic economy has experienced dramatic growth over the last ten years, with tourism and service industries taking the lead from agriculture.

Agriculture still plays an important role in the economy producing such crops as sugar, cocoa, coffee, maize, beans, tomatoes, molasses, bananas, rice and tobacco.

There is some light industry producing beer, tinned foodstuffs, glass products, textiles, soap, cigarettes, construction materials, cement, plastic articles, paint, rum, matches and peanut oil.

There are also deposits of ferro-nickel, gold and silver.
